Are We Prepred to Love
This sermon centers on the foundational truth that love defines both God and the Christian life. Without love, we are not truly living as Christians. Everything good around us was created by God out of His love for us, and Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that God is love.
The Foundation: God’s Love
The Bible speaks of love hundreds of times, clearly defining God by His love (1 John 4:7–8). Jesus Christ came to earth as the ultimate expression of that love—showing us how to love and sacrificing Himself so we could be redeemed. Understanding God’s love is the starting point of our faith.
Our Purpose as Believers
Our main purpose on this planet can be summed up in three responsibilities:
1. Discover why we are loved by God
2. Learn how to love as God loves
3. Share that love with everyone
The Call to Love
Jesus teaches that the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–39). This raises important questions:
Are we prepared to love?
Do we truly understand what it means to love others?
Loving in the right way is difficult. It is a constant battle against our flesh, which naturally prioritizes self-interest. From a young age, we are trained to look out for ourselves, making Christlike love—putting others first—challenging and countercultural.
Practicing Love Daily
True love begins at home, within our families and marriages. Because loving others goes against our fleshly nature, it must be made a deliberate priority. Scripture defines this love clearly:
- 1 Corinthians 13:4–6 describes love as patient, kind, humble, and selfless.
- We are called to love with childlike innocence—not cynically or defensively, but openly and sincerely.
- 1 Peter 4:8–11 shows how love is expressed through service and using our gifts to benefit others.
Love Through the Holy Spirit
When we truly love, sinful behavior is pushed out of our lives. This kind of love cannot be achieved through human effort alone—it requires the work of the Holy Spirit. Loving well takes discipline, regular study of God’s Word, and a committed pursuit of God.
Love as Our Witness and Weapon
Love is what sets Christians apart. Jesus said people would recognize His followers by their love for one another. Satan’s primary goal is to hinder this love because love is a powerful weapon against the enemy. When we intentionally choose to love others, we actively resist his influence.
Conclusion
The Christian life is not about what we can do for ourselves, but what we can do for others. We are called to plan to love, live it out intentionally, and rely on God to guide us. The sermon concludes with a prayerful call: that the Lord would reveal the true meaning of love to us and empower us to put it into practice every day.
