Purpose Week 5

The central message of the Bible is that God alone is worthy of our worship. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture calls us to love, honor, and worship God above all else.

The Bible teaches that we are engaged in a spiritual battle against Satan. Among the three archangels mentioned in Scripture—Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer—Lucifer once held a unique position in heaven as the leader of worship. Ezekiel 28:12–17 describes Lucifer’s beauty, wisdom, and exalted status before his fall, as well as the pride that led to his downfall.

This raises three important questions about Satan:

1) What did Satan do before he fell?

Before his rebellion, Lucifer led worship in heaven. Isaiah 14:11–15 reveals how pride entered his heart, causing him to desire a position equal to God. His ambition to exalt himself ultimately led to his expulsion from heaven.

2) What is Satan trying to do now?

Satan’s goal has not changed. He seeks to draw worship away from God and direct it toward himself or anything that takes God’s rightful place. In Matthew 4:8–9, Satan even tempted Jesus to worship him. Revelation 13:4 shows that he continues to deceive people into giving their allegiance to someone or something other than God.

3) Who is heaven’s new worship leader?

The Church has been called to fulfill the role of worshiping and glorifying God. Revelation 21 presents a picture of God’s people gathered in His presence, worshiping Him for all eternity.

The key truth is that we were created to worship God. Satan’s original sin was attempting to replace God and receive the worship that belongs only to Him. He continues to tempt people to place other things—whether power, possessions, relationships, or even themselves—on the throne of their hearts. Yet Scripture makes it clear that only God is worthy of worship. As believers, we are called to resist Satan’s deception and devote our worship, loyalty, and praise to the Lord alone.
