Purpose Week 2
Every human body contains nearly 50 trillion cells, and within each cell is a unique DNA code designed specifically for you. No one else has your exact genetic makeup. In the same way, Scripture teaches that believers are part of the Body of Christ, and each Christian has a unique spiritual design and purpose within the church.
God has spiritually encoded every believer with gifts, callings, abilities, and characteristics meant to strengthen the Body of Christ. We each carry “spiritual DNA” that enables us to serve, minister, encourage, lead, teach, give, pray, and build up others for God’s glory. The question is not whether we have a purpose, but whether we will develop and use it.
There are influences that can either help or hinder our spiritual development.
Things That Hurt Spiritual Development
1) Distorted Vision
What we focus on shapes who we become. If our attention is fixed on worldly desires, pride, or comparison, our spiritual growth becomes distorted. Scripture reminds us that what we continually look at, we eventually become like.
2) Manipulation
Trying to control our own destiny instead of surrendering to God’s plan can damage spiritual growth. Some people covet the ministry or recognition of others instead of embracing the role God designed specifically for them. God never intended for us to compete within the Body of Christ, but to complete one another.
3) Spiritual Disease
Just as disease can corrupt the human body, spiritual disease can weaken the church and the believer.
- Bad doctrine leads people away from truth. We must guard our hearts and remain grounded in God’s Word.
- Bad relationships can pull us away from our calling. The people around us influence our spiritual health, so we should surround ourselves with godly influences that encourage growth and faithfulness.
Things That Help Spiritual Development
1) Proper Parenting and Mentoring
Spiritual growth flourishes when believers receive biblical guidance and mentorship. God uses pastors, leaders, parents, and mature Christians to help develop the spiritual DNA within us.
2) Proper Nourishment
A healthy believer feeds daily on the Word of God. Reading Scripture and obeying it strengthens our spiritual life and helps us mature into who God created us to be.
3) Proper Environment
A healthy local church provides the environment where spiritual gifts can grow and function properly. Church membership and partnership with other believers create accountability, encouragement, and opportunities to serve together in unity.
Conclusion
God has created each believer with divine purpose. He has placed spiritual DNA within us so we can fulfill a meaningful role in His church and in His kingdom. We are not accidents, spectators, or unnecessary parts of the Body of Christ. We are designed intentionally by God.
The Lord gives us the freedom to either develop those gifts or neglect them. But when we choose to serve Him faithfully, we become exactly what He intended us to be — a healthy, functioning part of the Body of Christ that helps others grow and brings glory to God.
Let us choose to embrace our spiritual DNA, develop our God-given gifts, and serve Christ with purpose.
